MOCA Cleveland in University Circle to host ‘Silent Disco’ Halloween party
CLEVELAND, Ohio — In clubs, music is usually seen as the thing you dance to. It is the thing that gets them on the dance floor, gets them moving. But it also plays another role – especially when the movements on the dance floor are so bad that you’d be hard-pressed to call it dancing.
In these situations, music provides the context. It makes you think to yourself, “Ah, there is music playing and people moving about strangely, almost like zombies. Therefore, they must be, um, dancing.”
Which sort of brings us to Silent Disco: Halloween Edition.
At 9 p.m. Saturday, the event hits the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, 11400 Euclid Avenue. It features DJs spinning house, funk and world music that is piped through headphones for attendees. The result, of course, is that people will be dancing to music they hear in their ears, but the place itself will be silent.
(Unless, of course, the music is 4’33.” The renowned John Cage piece consists of four minutes and 33 seconds of musical silence in order for listeners to focus on the environmental sounds of the place where the “performance” is taking place.)
Forget the Monster Mash – this is what Halloween 2015 looks like. Back by popular demand, dance, sing and vamp the night away donning wireless headphones with hundreds of other undead party-goers. This Halloween-themed, museum-wide Silent Disco Party* will feature spectral surprises at every turn. This time, two dueling DJs (DJ Lawrence Daniel Caswell and DJ Red-I) bumping music only heard through headphones.
When you need a breath from boogying through boogie monsters, a lounge awaits with a photo booth, couches and a full cash bar available. Costumes and dance moves will be rewarded with prizes you’ll be dying to show off. For the less competitive, perhaps a round of Koffin Karaoke or a maze full of funhouse antics will suit your fancy. At the Silent Disco: Halloween Edition, no one can hear you scream.

The event includes a Halloween costume contest, a photo booth and Halloween-related themes. DJ Lawrence Daniel Caswell and DJ Red-I will spin the tunes.
It will also give those not wearing headphones the opportunity to watch people dance in silence – with the musical context. So are they really dancing or merely zombies flailing about? We shall see… $20 in advance, $25 at door (headphones are provided). For tickets, go to mocacleveland.org.
*What is a Silent Disco? It’s an event where people dance to music listened to on wireless headphones. Those without the headphones hear no music, giving the effect of a room full of people dancing to nothing.
